Metabolism of the new synthetic cannabinoid EG‑018 inhuman hepatocytes by high‑resolution mass spectrometry.
A novel SC, EG-018 (naphthalen-1-yl(9-pentyl-9H-car-bazol-3-yl)methanone) was first detected in the United Kingdom in a sampling campaign between July 2013 and January 2015 .
EG-018 was also detected in the Japa-nese regular illegal drug survey and in the state of Ohio in 2014. EG-018 is an analog of scheduled SC JWH-018 and THJ-018 , possessing a similar structural skeleton, a naphthalene and pentyl chain connected via a middle core substructure. In JWH-018, the middle core is an indole, in THJ-018 an indazole, and in EG-018 a carbazole .
EG-018 was the first identified SC with a mid-dle core substructure of three aromatic rings. The binding affinity of JWH-018 to CB1 is high, while that of EG-018 is unknown. Identifying a new SC intake and its associated adverse effects requires elucidation of novel metabolites.
However, all previously investigated SCs were extensively metabolized and excreted primarily in urine, with rare detection of the parent SCs.
